Kellan Lutz ('Emmett' in Twilight)

Are you ready for this big release in November?

Kellan Lutz: "Of what? What's being released?"

Some little tiny vampire movie…

Kellan Lutz: "Harry Potter switched dates so… What is that? A vampire movie? Sounds cool. I like vampires."

And you play one.

Kellan Lutz: "I do. I play Emmett Cullen and I'm really excited. We did ADR a couple of weeks ago so I saw a bunch of the big scenes. I've yet to see the movie though so I can't wait to see that."

Why haven't they shown it to you yet?

Kellan Lutz: "I've been out of town a lot of times. The rest of the cast have seen it, and now I think this next week we're trying to work it in where I can go in and see it. So, I'm excited. I've heard a lot of good things from everyone."

You've heard good things? Did you have to do any of the reshoots that they just did?

Kellan Lutz: "Yes, yes."

What did they add in?

Kellan Lutz: "Pretty much just scenes that help transition the book into a movie. A lot of stuff for people who haven't seen…like the treaty stuff with the Quileute family and then the vampires and how Dr Carlisle came together and made the treaty. It doesn't really explain that too much in the books so we're showing it more visually. So for the people who didn't read the books, they get to see what actually happens."

Anything else?

Kellan Lutz: "Yeah, a couple of other things."

You're not going to tell.

Kellan Lutz: "I can't. I can't. You'll check it out, but you'll like it."

What's it like playing Emmett?

Kellan Lutz: "Emmett's awesome. He's the coolest character I think I could play as far as Twilight. He's just the fun-loving vampire. He just has fun cracking jokes at Bella and being the big brother to all the other family members."

And he's super strong.

Kellan Lutz: "He is super strong."

So did you bulk up?

Kellan Lutz: "I did, I did. It was really fun. Actually, Peter (Facinelli) and Edi (Gathegi) and myself – Peter has this P90X workout program and I learned Bas Rutten when I was in Africa doing Generation Kill, so it's a lot of Muay Thai Jiu-Jitsu type of training. And just ate a lot of protein and bulked up. A lot of push-ups, a lot of abs, and just heavy lifting."

Did you expect the fan reaction to this? As soon as you say the word Twilight people go crazy.

Kellan Lutz: "Yeah, they… No, in answer to your question. I did not. I really didn't know what I was getting myself into. I just thought it was a cool vampire movie until I realized it was a book and that there were other books. And once I read those, I could see why there's such a cool following with it. So it's really fun to be a part of it."

Kellan Lutz: "I have. I have yet to finish Breaking Dawn. I'm only on the second chapter. It's tough. I find myself getting antsy when I read so I really need to find time and make time to read or I forget and have to reread the chapter. So that one's… I'm taking my time with that one."

Did they sign you guys for four?

Kellan Lutz: "I don't know."

Did they sign you for two?

Kellan Lutz: "Maybe. I really need to ask that question."

The thing is though, you're never supposed to age as a vampire so if they take a few years to shoot this… You are going to try and keep yourself in shape?

Kellan Lutz: "Shoot what?"

All the way up to Breaking Dawn?

Kellan Lutz: "That would be amazing if we shoot all of those. That's all that we can ask for as far as, you know, like Harry Potter, we really hope we can live up to that and make all the books into movies. And I really think if we end up doing the other books into movies that we'll shoot them side by side, so that the age thing… Plus, we are playing high schoolers. It's not Harry Potter where they start young so they kind of have to tap those out. With us, we aren't really aging too much."

Do you have a favorite scene that you filmed – that you can actually talk about?

Kellan Lutz: "Well, you know what? I really did enjoy doing the treaty stuff. I mean, wearing the period pieces and then actually explaining that stuff really visually was a lot of fun. I mean the baseball stuff as far as the stunts was a lot of fun for me. I just love doing stunts and getting dirty and hurting myself. But yeah, every scene was fun to shoot."

And Generation Kill was one of my favorite mini-series' that they had on [this summer]. I love that series. What was it like filming it?

Kellan Lutz: "Tough, tough. A lot of sitting around. I played Jason Lilley and he was a Humvee driver so a lot of the scenes… There were massive scenes – we had tons of Humvees, real live equipment - and we're only driving 10 miles an hour. And then you drive down a road and then the roads are so small that you need to end up backing all the Humvees back, so that took hours. You're doing one scene. I remember we would shoot two pages a day and that's, I mean, 30 days to do one episode. It just blew my mind because I'm used to TV where it's maybe a week, maybe nine days. But here it's 30 days, and I didn't really think it would take so long. I thought I'd have time to come back to the US and see my family, maybe a week here or there. But I was there for seven months straight, six day weeks. It was tough but being with 39 other guys, it was a family. It was another life, but a family – like your frat years, in a way.
